Buxton Musical Society

Sing Regency music in a Regency town

Come and join us as we spend the day in glorious Buxton preparing Haydn’s last great mass for a performance with small orchestra and soloists in the late afternoon.

Not only that, but workshop participants can then return for the Buxton International Festival performance of this work at the Festival Mass on Sunday 19 July.

This season marks the ending of one chapter and the beginning of another for the Buxton Musical Society. After fifty-eight years leading the Society, Michael Williams MBE is handing on the baton to our new Musical Director, Sam Hayes. We celebrated Michael’s remarkable tenure with a Gala Concert of Elgar’s The Apostles in November 2025.

Founded in 1944, the Buxton Musical Society draws on the rich cultural life of the Buxton area to form a group of singers and players who regularly perform orchestral and choral works. Under the direction of Michael Williams MBE the Society performs five or six concerts per year at St John’s Church and at the Buxton Opera House.
