As part of the Buxton International Festival’s final choral-themed weekend, Buxton Musical Society are marking the centenary of the death of Giacomo Puccini by performing his largest sacred work – the Messa di Gloria<\/em>. Written when he was 21, the work shows the influence of his family’s close involvement with the Cattedrale di San Martino in Lucca but hints at the glorious melodies that were to come in his later work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concert opens with Respighi’s rousing Primavera <\/em>from the Botticelli Tryptych and a rarely performed work by Swiss composer Frank Martin who died fifty years ago – Pavane Couleur du Temps<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
